Finally , i have one nice , splendid , heart touching KANK Review , from my good old friend BlaQ , he is a part time Journalist and a great friend of mine . And sure , i would love a great Rani Review , from my friend . He saw KANK ( Kabhi Alvidha Naa kehna ) , last week and came straight to me , saying ” Hey , i have something for ya .. a Rani Review ” . And what you are gonna read now is this . So stay slim , cause here we go .
Oh Rani ! Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna
Before I give you a detailed review on the movie - let us first look at a few basics you should now before you read the rest1) It is a movie about a couple having an extra-marital affair ( I call it an “affair” for a lack of a better word)
2) it’s a karan johar movie
3) It is the most highly awaited bollywood movie of 2006 ( which has nothing to do with Big B , SRK , Rani Mukerjee , Preity Zinta and Abishek bachan acting in it !)My first feeling when I heard that the movie was so long ( roughly 3.5 hours) was that it was going to be extremely excruciating. But once you start watching it , time really does fly by ( especially when they insert captions saying “3 years later” and “4 years later” at regular intervals). But I have to confess that the whole bottom - burning experience ( Try sitting in the same seat for 3.5 hours and you will know what “Butt-Burning” really is) was made immensely bearable by RANI MUKHERJEE ( Rani Mukerjee) and her awesome portrayal of “Maya Talwar”.
She enters the movie as a bride sitting on a park bench in new york. ( And one thing you can trust karan johar to do is to make rani and the backdrop look gorgeous).She is sitting there fully dressed in a traditional bridal outfit but doesn’t want to go to her own marriage. This is where SRK ( playing “Dev Saran”) enters and convinces her to get married. And she says ” KANK” ( meaning “Never say Goodbye” for those who don’t know hindi) - which sort of sets the tone for the rest of the movie.
The movie is just a hindi movie for namesake ; that is because I saw the movie with a couple of my friends who had no hindi knowledge except “Han” and “Nahi” and they sat through the whole movie without ever asking me for what the actors were saying ( Except for a few of the longer emotional lines and few funny jokes). The reason for that is the acting on the part of Rani & SRK was that good. She is a school teacher in new-york ( Yeah ! you can stop drooling now.. we all wish we had a school teacher like Rani ) and she is totally unhappy with her relationship with Abishek. Because he always has a physical approach to things but she decides that “” is not everything in a relationship.( who wouldn’t want to have a physical relationship with RANI MUKHERJEE). Also at the same time Sharukh turns from a Million dollar Soccer star to a limping good for nothing ( that’s coz he gets struck by a car rite after their first meeting at rani’s wedding) And Zinta is a Fashion Magazine Correspondent who is very devoted to her carrer and she starts blaming SRK for his incapability to earn money and claims that she is wearing the pants in the house. This enrages SRK and it is out of this hate that they both ( Rani & SRK ) end up helping each other salvage their Marriages. But little do they know that this small partnership of helping each other with their Spouses will turn into an everlasting love. ( Which is what eventually happens!).
But you are always reminded in a rude sort of way that their Wonderful relationship is always a fleeting dream and that there is no way for them to actually savor their true love in life. One such scene in the movie is where SRK buys a bouquet of roses to give to Rani ( Who else..?) But then his ACTUAL wife zinta shows up at the same place and time and he has to decide whom to give it to. Then he calls out “Riya” and its just when rani notices Preity beside her and walks away avoiding SRK in the way. But the truly sad part in the movie ( for a die-hard Rani fan like me) is watching Rani with tears down her beautiful face. But the plot does call for her to run around crying in more places than one. ALL IN ALL this should have been a simple movie but the characters of Abishek and Priety do make it more than just simple… they make it TRULY believable. Also the role of Amitabh Bachan as ” Sexy Sam” needs some special praise ( although he dies halfway through the movie).
Oh ! and before I forget …. A good cold bath does wonders to a roasted Buttock ( I tried it… it works ). I just gave you the remedy to “Butt-Burning” because I know that right after you finish reading this review - you are going to run madly to your nearest movie theater and Deep fry your bottom watching “Kabhi Alvidha Na Kehna”. Trust me it’s worth every minute ( especially watching Rani )
